The Leader Listens.

Cllr Monroe Palmer on a flagrant misuse of Council money

You will remember that there have been a number of these events around Barnet. The Childs Hill ward one I attended as a resident had a miserable attendance of only twelve residents plus me and the caretaker. I must have missed one because I have now received a further letter from Councillor Freer  thanking me, as a Resident (not as a Councillor) for attending the meeting where apparently 15 people attended including me and the caretaker, who couldn’t leave until he had locked up! So 4,000 got an invite; a school  hall was hired; the meeting was staffed by council staff. Then  a week later all 4,000 got a letter and four pages of notes of the meeting. This letter came by Royal Mail so the postage on two letters to about 2000 households plus what I describe above, and to what purpose other than to make residents, particularly those that do not attend, believe that the ‘Leader listens’ and provides answers. What were the questions asked:

1. A query about Golders Green Library which could easily be answered by ward              councillors

2. A comment about foreign languages spoken in schools and provision of              community , premises for hire to Muslim groups

3. Questions on traffic calming; timing of traffic lights; promotion of cycling; some general planning and environmental matters.

All in all, these were all questions any ward councillor should be able to answer although not necessarily solve them all.  I am unconvinced that the Council Leader can solve them any better than a ward councillor but the ‘Leader listens’ must cost the Council Tax payers  a fair sum of money.

Cll Freer is, of course the Conservative candidate fro the parliamentary seat of Finchley and Golders Green—draw your own conclusions as to his motive for these events!
