“Gambling with out money” added Cllr Susette Palmer “is not what one expects of a reputable Council.”

She is particularly disgusted that the then Council Leader , Mike Freer, refused to take responsibility for the Icelandic Bank Debacle.

bBarnet residents will now pay more in Council Tax than neighbouring Brent and Camden. Barnet Council Tax Payers face further cuts in services and increases in tax following the Icelandic Banks debacle. The Conservative administration has left little room for manoeuvre but despite this we Liberal Democrats have come up with a budget that will work”

Councillor Monroe Palmer speaking in Barnet Council’s budget debate said.

Barnet Tory controlled Council have produced an ‘in denial’ budget. In denial as Barnet Tories will not admit that they have gambled with money borrowed and lost it.. He compared Barnet’s actions with putting the money on Mic’s Delight at the 4.45 at Kempton Park, which won on Saturday at 20 to 1. ‘If Barnet had put the £27.4 million  invested in Icelandic Banks, on such a nag we would have made a profit of £548 million. ‘ Monroe said that this could be described as a policy strategy but residents of Barnet did not elect a Council to take such risks be it in Icelandic Banks or the 4.45 at Kempton Park’

It is nonsense to say that the loss of these monies will not have a significant effect on Barnet’s front-line services.
